TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. —
Team Travis will celebrate the final farewell for the KC-10 Extender in a two-day event September 25-26, 2024.
After decades of service, the KC-10 Extender, assigned to the 60th Air Mobility Wing and 349th AMW, will be decommissioned during various final farewell events hosted by Col. Jay Johnson, 60th AMW commander.
After entering service in 1981, the KC-10A Extender aircraft will be fully divested in September 2024. The 60th Air Mobility Wing is the last host wing for the KC-10A Extender. As the KC-10 concludes its mission, the airframe will be replaced by the KC-46 Pegasus, providing Team Travis the capabilities to begin a new era of air-to-air refueling.
“As a KC-10 flyer myself, it has been amazing to watch the global impact this aircraft has had. The Ten will continue supporting the mission right up until her last flight,” said Johnson. “As we take the time to appreciate the legacy and history of the KC-10, we also have an opportunity to look forward to the future of tanker operations. I am excited to watch the same sense of pride and community build as we transition to the next generation of tanker operations.”
On September 25, 2024, Team Travis will host an event for final tours of the aircraft out on the flightline. Those interested in attending will be able to view the KC-10 and walk through the aircraft one last time. The event will be open to those with base access 9-11 a.m.
Additionally, on September 26, 2024, Team Travis will honor the legacy, heritage and historical significance of the KC-10, the aircrew and maintainers who supported it with an official final farewell ceremony. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in Hangar 46 and will include a keynote speaker and conclude with a final flight of the KC-10.
As the final base to operate the KC-10, Travis AFB will have the honor of bidding farewell to an aircraft that has been a vital component of the U.S. military’s global reach and power projection capabilities. This marks the closing of an important chapter in the history of military aviation.
